Sharpe Enemy Richard Sharpe Adventure Series #6 Bernard Cornwell Books
Simply some of the finest story telling I've had the pleasure of reading. Cornwell makes so much happen between the two virtual covers (Kindle version) that there is never a lull in Sharpe's exploits. There is a continual strain of excitement along with tension and conflict, both personal and of course that of the war. First, it was great that Sharpe is promoted, however tenuous it may be, right in the beginning of the story but, as usual, Cornwell doesn't give anything away for free. The joy soon disappears as Sharpe faces one conflict after another. This book has such a texture of descriptive words that seem to effortlessly propel a reader to the time and place with all the feeling of the emotions, the sights, the sounds, the smells and even the tastes of the battlefield, the quiet moments and the daily life of a soldier under Sharpe's command. Cornwell successfully conveys Sharpe's and every other character's emotions so that a reader can't help but feel a connection. I haven't come close to reading all of Cornwell's work so I don't know if this ranks among the finest but what I do know is that it is one of the finest examples of the story teller's art I've read and I've read a lot. If you've watched the TV series you'll recognize this story but only fleetingly. The book outshines the TV episode in depth, breadth and detail by a hundredfold. I highly recommend this book but I also recommend that you start with the first book in the series, Sharpe's Tiger and read on from there. You won't be disappointed with any book in this series. This is great entertainment for such a low price.Tags : Amazon.com: Sharpe's Enemy (Richard Sharpe's Adventure Series #6) (9780140294347): Bernard Cornwell: Books,Bernard Cornwell,Sharpe's Enemy (Richard Sharpe's Adventure Series #6),Penguin Group,0140294341,Action & Adventure,Historical - General,War & Military,Great Britain - History, Military - 19th century,Great Britain;History, Military;19th century;Fiction.,Historical fiction,Napoleonic Wars, 1800-1815,Napoleonic Wars, 1800-1815;Fiction.,Peninsular War, 1807-1814,Peninsular War, 1807-1814;Fiction.,Sharpe, Richard (Fictitious character),War stories,FICTION Action & Adventure,FICTION Historical General,FICTION War & Military,Fiction,Fiction - Historical,Fiction-Coming of Age,Fiction-Historical,FictionHistorical - General,GENERAL,General Adult,Great BritainBritish Isles,United States,War & combat fiction, historical fiction; napoleonic wars; historical; war; peninsular war; military; military history; military fiction; napoleon; adventure; military books; saga; naval; alternate history; pirates; action; fiction; fiction books; literary fiction; literature; historical fiction books; historical fiction novels; thriller; sharpe; richard sharpe; bernard cornwell; classic; rome; england; maritime; 19th century; action adventure; cornwell; drama; ancient rome; ancient history; warfare; british history; historical books; 18th century; sea, historical;adventure;military;military fiction;war;alternate history;historical fiction books;historical fiction novels;adventure books;survival;literary fiction;military books;war books;historical fiction;fiction;novels;fiction books;historical novels;literature;books fiction;survival fiction;realistic fiction books;books historical fiction;action adventure;napoleonic wars;sharpe;rome;naval;saga;ancient rome;napoleon;romance;england;military history;drama;pirates;fantasy;classic;thriller,FICTION Action & Adventure,FICTION Historical General,FICTION War & Military,FictionHistorical - General,Fiction - Historical,Fiction,War & combat fiction
Sharpe Enemy Richard Sharpe Adventure Series #6 Bernard Cornwell Books Reviews
For sure he's no Angel. Here is a low born, illegitimate son of a whore, a self raised child of the London stews. A dirty street fighter and murderer who joined the army of the British East India Company because he had no place to go.
On saving the life of the future Duke of Wellington, he becomes a Sergeant and the rest is history.I have to stop here because I am afraid of giving the story away.
This is probably Cornwell at his best. A gripping tale of a hopeless defense, love, intrigue, comradery of soldiers across enemy lines, a mad villain with wicked plans, and Sharpe and Harper pulling out all the stops to survive.
I read this series, start to finish. Chronological order. Every book is excellent . the story in full is excellent.
All winter, rainy days, fireplace, coffee, cookies. Great time spent with wonderful characters, good and bad.
The stories built into history lessons were just masterful.
Sorry, Do to so many read, I am copying one review for all. Singularly or Collectively, you can not go wrong with Bernard Cornwell.
I like the Sharpe series, but this one is particularly interesting. There are some new, finely drawn characters, as well as details of planning a defense that is just short of (too) amazing. I guess the novelty of rockets could make what happened possible, if not plausible, and FINALLY, Sargent Hakeswell goes to his reward --for those of you who have thought he has been left alive as a plot device one to many times--HE CAN BE KILLED ! I never doubted it for a minute. I read this book in one day/night because I wanted to find out, what's next?
Like all of Bernard Cornwell’s novels, Sharpe’s Enemy is outstanding. Readers new to Rich Sharpe should read the series in chronological order.
The book is great. I love Bernard Cornwell's books. I've read all of the Sharpe books in order starting from the India campaigns. My problem lies in the fact that because he did not write the stories in chronological order, there are inconsistencies in the story line. How he mentions how he gave his ruby from the Tipoo to a girl who ran away with another man. But according to another prior book he sold it to buy a house for Grace. These are minor inconsistencies, but it's a little aggravating. I wish he could have made the story line all add up. This isn't the only time he's provided inconsistent details. I've read enough of the series where it's bothersome now. But, don't let it stop you from reading the series.
I must confess that my knowledge of the wars fought by the british army in the late 1700's and early 1800's is lacking to say the least. This is one of a series of novels staring fictional character, Richard Sharpe, but that tells the history about the battles fought. At the end of each novel Cornwell tells what really happened snf where he took license to change things in his book. If you read this book you should start with the first in the series and progress through in the order that they were written. Here is that order. I sure hope that there may be more to come from Cornwell in the future!
Sharpe’s Tiger
Sharpe’s Triumph
Sharpe’s Fortress
Sharpe’s Trafalgar
Sharpe’s Prey
Sharpe’s Rifle
Sharpe’s Havoc
Sharpe’s Eagle
Sharpe’s Gold
Sharpe’s Escape
Sharpe’s Fury
Sharpe’s Battle
Sharpe’s Company
Sharpe’s Sword
Sharpe’s Enemy
Sharpe’s Honor
Sharpe’s Regiment
Sharpe’s Siege
Sharpe’s Revenge
Waterloo
Sharpe’s Devil
