The writing itself was excellent. The plot was very good. The hero was conflicted and nuanced.

The heroine was the deal breaker. I liked her in the beginning but about half way through, she was became incredibly annoying. She was so nosy that she turned into a nagging ninny.

Oh, and there was the whole question about who is feeding the newborn baby. No wet nurse mentioned and that was baffling to me.

In spite of the good points, I just could not get past the things that bothered me.

However, I would read another book by this author. Just not this particular one.

Persuasion HQN Brenda Joyce 9780373776924 Books Reviews

This is not the Brenda Joyce of the past; the one who had me secretly reading and loving romance novels because the stories were entertaining and I got to see two people fall in love. Her recent books are boring, lackluster and the characters have no chemistry. I find myself scanning the pages, just to get through the book. It started off with the god-awful Dark Series and now this. The heroine of Persuasion doesn't make you want to root for her. Amelia comes across as annoying and screeching - all her sentences end in exclamation points. I also never got to know her or Simon. I miss the old Brenda Joyce who wrote books about passionate women who made me root for their love, and made me want to read their stories over and over again.
I've just been so disappointed of late, that I think I have finally given up her.
3-1/2 stars -- better than a 3, but not quite a 4.

Having read Brenda Joyce's de Warren books, "Splendor" and now the first two books of "The Spymaster's Men" series, as well as three of her contemporary novels ("House of Dreams," "The Third Heiress" and "Double Take"), I have to say that her historical books are definitely better reads than her contemporary books. That said, I understand the dissatisfaction that other reviewers have expressed in regard to "Persuasion" and its predecessor, "Seduction."

I didn't think we got enough background on the male lead in this book. In "The Prize," one of the first de Warren books, early in the book (possibly even as early as the Prologue), we relive the events surrounding the death of Devlin's father. There, we understand why he is so driven to take down the man who killed his father. We need similar background for Simon Grenville. He briefly mentions finding his brother's broken body, but he never really explains what happened that lead to his departure from Cornwall, or his feelings about Amelia at the time. Was he in love with her then? Did he plan to marry her until he was forced to marry the woman that his brother had planned to marry? Or was she convenient then and convenient ten years later when he came back? He never actually says, other than to say that he felt he had to marry his first wife after his brother died.

I also agree that there seems to be something missing in the Greystone sisters. In "Seduction," Julianne certainly is too naive and starry-eyed (to the point of being "stoopid"). Here, Amelia is too blindly forgiving, as she explains away Simon's bad behavior, regardless of what it is. Going back to comparing this series to books in the de Warren series, the female leads here do not seem as strong.

One really nit-picky thing -- and I don't think this amounts to a spoiler, even though it is in the last chapter. When asked about Simon, Amelia says, "There has been no word, Signor, and I am sure it is safe for his lordship to send word." What does that mean? Is there a crucial "not" missing? Otherwise, it makes no sense.

Still, I gave this book 3-1/2 stars. I bought this for my last night, and finished it in less than 24 hours. It kept my interest. And it kept me reading from chapter to chapter to the point where I didn't want to stop to go to sleep. The history of the time was interesting. The star-crossed couple was engaging. Yes, I had questions when the book ended. Some may be answered in subsequent books -- and some (the ones mentioned above) probably won't be answered at all. But, I'm looking forward to the third book in the series, which is another reason, I gave it 3-1/2 stars.
I found Brenda Joyce's latest book Persuasion to be better than her first in her newest series but this novel is not one of her best books. Rather this is a story with a good plot line but characters who keep an emotional distance from each other for too long.

Amelia is a loyal daughter who has taken care of her mother who suffers from dementia for years. She fell in love ten years earlier with Simon a second son of an Earl who lived in the country estate close to her home. He left Amelia without a word and married another. When Simon's wife dies, Amelia sees Simon again and her old feelings come rushing back.

Simon is a spy for Britain playing a dangerous game with his British Spymaster and his contacts in France. Simon had no deep feelings for his late wife and he is concerned about his children's safety and well being, so much so that he asks Amelia to move with him to London and become his housekeeper.

Amelia has a compassionate heart and I liked this about her, she is a woman who knows her strengths and weaknesses and she does not see kindness as a weakness. Instead she reaches out to Simon and his family whole heartedly. Amelia begins to piece together that Simon is keeping secrets and when she feels the children and Simon could be in danger she sets out to discover the mysteries in Simon's life.

I liked these characters. Simon is a concerned father and he is trying to protect Amelia too. He is caught in a web that seems to be too sticky to escape. Amelia is persistent and she deeply cares for those around her. So why does this not get higher than 3 stars? Simon pushes Amelia away both figuratively and literally. He is in a constant state of flux and when these two finally do share their feelings it is brushed over way too quickly, Simon's espionage gets more page space than his romance with Amelia. The reader does not have the opportunity to savor this couple's romance.
The story was well written and the storyline well defined. The author drew the reader in and kept our interest as well as allowing us to experience her characters many emotions throughout the story. The story had intrigue, suspense, discoveries, betrayal, espionage, love, and a happily ever after. The on!y thing that bother me was that I never found out what happened to Tom; he should have been prosecuted unless the story continues with the brothers.
The writing itself was excellent. The plot was very good. The hero was conflicted and nuanced.
