This is my favorite Deborah Simmons book. The romance btwn the H/h is one of the sweetest ones I have read in a medieval period. The love scenes added to their relationship and the climax reveals what you see intensifying throughout the novel: their epic love.

Heroine is desperate and needs to marry to secure her missing brother's holding. She has been doing a good job on her own but that deceitful neighbor is a continuous threat that she can't ignore anymore. He covets both the land and the heroine. She makes decision to see marriage to the most feared knight in hopes protecting her brother's land. I give her great credit for her loyalty to her brother. The hero agrees as he is loyal to the crown but is not happy. There are secrets he wants to keep and doesn't need the problems that fall on his door to possible reveal these secrets. He lives in shadows to keep these secrets and has loyal servants that keep his secrets. Hero at first keeps his distance from heroine but starts to become jelouse of the friendly relationship the heroine develops with his loyal 2nd in command. There is nothing inappropriate but hero is at this point becoming increasingly possessive of his wife that others have described to him as beautiful. In a turning point he makes decision to consumate the marriage and take possession of his wife. The heroine is strong, sweet, loyal and honest. Her good nature starts releasing the strong emotions the hero struggles to hold in check. That is why he is called Red Knight because in battle he is consumed by strong emotions and becomes a vicious killing machine. By time he is done he is bathing in the blood of his opponents, blood RED. Well those emotions now keep growing toward his wife and the heroine is returning the feelings. They fight it internally, more the heroine than the hero, but the pages in the book are hot with the intense sexual chemistry these two omit. What holds heroine back is fear the hero is a sorcerer that has bewitched her. There are some nicely written turning points in the book that includes heroine finding out hero's secret. That scene was intense as the hero losses control and practically destroys the room, but the scared heroine held her ground and allowed for further growth in their already intense loyal relationship. Hero makes more effort to follow his wife's recommendations because by this time the Red Knight is head over heals in love and wants to please his wife. During an outing he almost loses the heroine but he saves her and in turn he regains a part of himself. Their love continues to grow and their loyalty to each other is cemented. However the ugliness that drove the heroine to the hero will not cease and hero is forced to confront the threat. Unfortunately this starts the chain of events that bring the this tale to epic proportions and end in a beautiful written epilogue.

It is a wonderful written medieval tale that has pages of intense heat, action and revelations that all accumulate to bring these two to their well deserved happy ending. This is a safe read. No OW or OM. Hero is heroine's first. The love scenes are rated R and there are numerous throughout the book; hero is very physical and emotional in almost everything he does. They are crazy for each other by three quarters of the book and are not afraid to show it. Hero is possessive and protective of the heroine. He just wants to see her happy. There are some crazy or funny maybe misunderstandings that add to the belief the hero is a sorcerer. It added nicely to the story. I love this book and have read it countless times. Highly recommend this treasure of a book to anyone.

The Devil Lady Deborah Simmons 9780373288410 Books Reviews

I need to start a "must re-read" book shelf. The Devil's Lady would be the first book on it because I totally, completely, embarrassingly missed all the clues for the BIG REVEAL as to the secrets behind Baron Montmorency. I am kind of flabbergasted at myself, but when I went back to look at my notes for this review, there were a total of two. This means I didn't even come up for air while reading this rich, absorbing tale of doom and epic love.

Spoiled noblewoman Aisley de Laci seeks to avoid marriage to her despicable and grasping neighbor, along with any other suitors King Edward plans to toss her way, by selecting the demonic Red Knight as her intended bridegroom. She expects the secluded and secretive knight will likely ignore King Edward and send her home. Well, the best of intentions and all that....

Baron Montmorency does not ignore his liege, and Aisley is compelled to stay at the gloomy, sinister keep. There is a distinct Gothic tone to this book that I loved. While it takes place centuries earlier than most Gothic novels, readers of that genre will probably enjoy this book for its sense of doom and atmosphere. Unlocking the key to the despair is always the adventure of such novels, and I was completely blindsided in this one. The mystery alone is worth the re-read.

What is also worth the re-read is the love story. It is the swooning, epic kind deep, emotional, building, climactic, heart-rending and very sensuous. Of course, it doesn't start that way. Aisley is impetuous and full of herself, although a competent chatelaine. Montmorency is taciturn, possessive, frightening and hiding something. The scenes as these two come to know each other are well written and perfectly paced.

Now, I'm going to go check if there is a sequel, because I know I won't be satisfied by the re-read.
This was an enjoyable and quick read. I like this plot of an arranged marriage between strangers. This book throws in the twist of Piers' sinister reputation that seems to be confirmed by the fact he remains constantly in complete darkness and is rarely seen outside his rooms. That made an interesting twist.

What I did not like is that the author solves the H's problem too easily by invoking the aid of a magical white stag. The white stag is on the heraldry of the h's family and is looked upon as a good luck talisman by them. I also did not enjoy or even understand the role of the town's elderly, witch-like healer. She also added a bit to the slight paranormal flavor of the book but other than that her role seemed superfluous. Clearly, this book ends by setting up the hero for the next book. I minded in that this presumably next hero actually saved the day at the end which I felt like really detracted from the hero in this book. I want this book's hero to save the day and rescue the heroine. These annoyances were not enough to make me dislike this book. I still enjoyed reading it but I am unlikely to read it again or even remember it in the long run.
Awesome medieval romance full of dark suspense, witty dialogue, and lusty love! Both the H and h were absolutely charming and redeemable throughout the story. Another book that I didn't want to stop reading until the end!! And no, its not a "clean" read but the erotica is tasteful, sensual, and appropriate IMO. Thank you Deborah Simmons for giving me a highly enjoyable journey to the time of Knights and their Ladies!!
