Beck and the Great Berry Battle Disney Fairies Laura Driscoll Judith H Clarke Books Reviews

I like animal stories. When I found out Beck was an "Animal Talent" fairy I wanted to skip straight to this book. I controlled myself instead and read the first 3 in the series. They were GREAT!

Then I read "Beck and the Great Berry Battle". I kept having to check the title to make sure I was reading the right book. This book should have been called "Beck is Around When Stuff Happens."

Beck is the weakest character so far. The artwork for this book is excellent, but it is wasted on a ho-hum story where everyone gets to be a hero or solve the puzzle or do cool stuff except Beck. Oh and by the way, "Animal Talent" is a secret Disney code for "Good With Children".

Go ahead and read the story, don't let me stop you. But I'm still hoping someone will write a story about Beck who actually WANTED to write a story about Beck.
My six-year-old loves the Disney fairies series of chapter books, but she did not find Beck and the Great Fairy Battle as engaging as some of the other titles. Beck the animal talent fairy finds herself facing a huge problem when the chipmunks and hummingbirds go to war over a lost hummingbird nest. The hummingbirds claim the chipmunks stole the nest, and the chipmunks deny any knowledge of the nest. When a young hummingbird named Twitter befriends a young chipmunk named Nan, Beck is hopeful that the two sides will come to some sort of understanding.

The story seemed to drag (I usually sit with my daughter as she reads the story out loud so that I can help her when she comes across a difficult word) and we both lost interest halfway through, though to her credit, my daughter did finish reading the story. There is too much repetition without enough interesting scenes to keep readers' interest. The message is a positive one, but the story is plodding.

The first book in Disney's Tinker Bell-related Pixie Hollow series to feature Beck, an "animal-talent" fairy with a heart of gold. Beck, who can speak to animals, gets in the middle of a turf war between the hummingbirds and chipmunks, practicing shuttle diplomacy as they critters pelt one another with berries. The anti-war message is simple, but soft -- no blood is shed, but everyone in Neverland is shocked by the bad behavior on each side. Although this isn't the best dramatic narrative in the Pixie Hollow series, it could be a good springboard for conflict resolution-oriented discussions, and talking about how misunderstandings can lead to big problems if left unchecked. Worth checking out. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews
We bought this book used.

The bad part of these girl-centric books is the Disney need to slap on a message. This particular book doesn't do well when it comes to establishing the fairy world, or even Beck as a character and instead focuses--a lot--on a great civil war between forest critters where the only casualties are berries. While fighting and battles themselves aren't funny by nature, even my six year old got bored with the whole fighting-over-a-misunderstanding premise, which she informed me was the case right away.
This book was just a huge miss with us. My son was bored out of his mind by the glittery cover and girly point of view (but we switch who gets to pick the books and it was my daughter's turn) and even my daughter didn't get nearly as excited or involved with the book as she usually does. She was hoping for more bits about taking care of animals (which was in fact why she picked this book up, because Beck is an animal-caretaker fairy). She also failed to connect with the tension at the climax because it involves a hawk as an uber bad guy and this past summer we met a few hawks at a presentation from the Louisville Raptor Rehabilitation group.
In the end we just all ended up feeling like this book was too little for its audience despite how much we wanted to like it.
I happened to stumble on the old Pixie Hollow books while cleaning my office. I figured it's time they go to the little library so other children can enjoy them but of course I had to give them a read first.

This is a very simple read. An advanced reader could go through this in one sitting.

Beck is an animal talent fairy. She loves what she does to the point of wishing she was an animal. She is called in to deal with a lost baby raccoon who would not talk to the other animal talent fairies. She solves this and on the way back home she visits her friends the grandparent moles and calms her agitated hummingbird friend Twitch.

The next day she notices other fairies have been hit with fallen berries. Five in fact which is rather odd as fairies tend to be skilled at dodging falling things like leaves, nuts and rain. She decides to investigate and quick finds berries are falling everywhere. What's going on?

She investigates further and finds the hummingbirds are upset over a lost nest which they think the chipmunks have stolen. They are defending their homes by launching berries at any who come close.

The berry battle is on!

As mentioned this is a very simple story. Beck is the central character and you do run into familiar characters. Don't expect a life story of Beck. It's not written that way. Kind of reads like it was from a TV episode.

It's not bad but it's not one I think would be re-read.
I want to buy every single book in this series for my daughter and myself. It is so cute and has answered questions about Neverland that I have had since I was. Kid. Enjoy
